Fleet & Gig Economy Glossary
Plain-language definitions of terms that come up often in fleet management and India's gig economy.
- Compliance Vault
- A searchable, centralized place to store a fleet’s documents (RC copies, KYC files, agreements) instead of spreading them across WhatsApp, paper folders, or personal devices.
- Digital Rent Collection
- Collecting a vehicle’s daily, weekly, or monthly rent from a driver through a digital payment method (typically UPI) instead of cash, with an automatic record of who paid, how much, and when.
- Driver KYC (Know Your Customer)
- The process of verifying a driver's identity before assigning them a vehicle, typically by checking government-issued documents such as Aadhaar, PAN, and a Driving Licence, plus bank account details for payments.
- Driving Licence (DL) Verification
- Confirming that a driver holds a valid driving licence for the vehicle class they’ll operate, one of the standard documents checked during driver KYC.
- Fleet Manager
- A role that handles a fleet's day-to-day operations, such as driver and vehicle assignment and cash collection recording, typically without access to the fleet owner's financial controls.
- Fleet Operating System
- Software that coordinates every part of running a vehicle fleet (vehicle assignment, driver management, rent collection, compliance, and earnings tracking) in one connected system, rather than as separate spreadsheets, paper registers, and messaging apps.
- Fleet Owner
- The person or business that owns the vehicles in a fleet and is financially responsible for it, typically with access to the full dashboard covering collections, dues, and driver-wise transaction history.
- Gig Economy / Gig Workforce
- Workers, such as drivers and delivery riders, who earn through short-term or per-task work rather than fixed monthly salaried employment, often paid daily or per trip.
- Onboarding (Fleet Context)
- The process of setting up a new fleet owner or company on a platform: verifying their details, activating their account, and adding their initial vehicles and drivers.
- RC (Registration Certificate)
- The official document proving a vehicle is registered with the government, one of the standard documents kept on file for each vehicle in a fleet.
- Reconciliation
- Matching recorded payments against actual money received to confirm they agree, done automatically when payments run through a digital system instead of manually against a paper ledger.
- UPI (Unified Payments Interface)
- India's real-time payment system that lets money move directly between bank accounts through a mobile app, the most common way digital rent payments are collected from drivers.
